L’Orange & Stik Figa

L’Orange & Stik Figa

The City Under The City (out 10/15), a new collaboration album from producer L’Orange and Topeka, KS MC Stik Figa. Through music and lyrics, Mello Music Group teams up with L’Orange and Stik Figa to take you on a dark and abstract journey through a realm that lies under the surface. Guest features include haunting verses from Rapsody, Open Mike Eagle, MindsOne, Has-Lo, 7evenThirty and yU as well as cuts by DJ Iron. There’s a world under the concrete.

Hailing from North Carolina, L’Orange is a hip hop producer, musician and writer.  His influences include late legends like J Dilla and pioneering jazz vocalist Billie Holiday. Producers Kon Sci, Oddisee and Pete Rock have also heavily shaped L’Orange’s style as a beatmaker and producer.

Dedicated to originality, L’Orange imbues his smoky, soul-soaked tracks with lush texture through inventive mixing and psychedelic cuts from classic radio recordings.  A shopworn MPC and vintage vinyl are essentially paintbrush and palette for L’Orange. He finds his signature samples from pre-1950s jazz, soul and radio.  He stitches together a sound that acknowledges his penchant for classic film noir and shadowy motifs.  L’Orange albums are often cinematic and narrative in structure, exemplifying the artist’s highly conceptual creative process.

Although embracing seclusion when practicing his craft, L’Orange is a highly respected collaborator.  As a working producer, L’Orange has collaborated with MCs, vocalists, instrumentalists, spoken word artists, filmmakers and visual artists of different media.
While L’Orange is an inspired beatmaker and highly capable producer, it is the perpetual search for beauty in the dark, unusual and forgotten corners of music that make him a true artist.  Every L’Orange production is a unique, organic and undeniably original work of art, giving the listener a glimpse of the artist himself, even if obscured slightly by shadow.

Stik Figa

From the Top (Topeka, Kansas),  Stik Figa is the perfect middle of the map emcee combining elements of  vocal inflection as varied the regions influences.  Combining detailed lyricism with a dirty south drawl, Stik’svirtuosity has led him to be featured on premier outlets such as NPR and 2DopeBoyz.There is a southern charm (the result of spending some childhood years in Memphis) laced into Stik’s decidedly thoughtful lyricism.

Best known for the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education legal decision, Stik’s hometown was the first spot he won fans over, becoming a regional legend, having opened for every major act to come through Kansas City, winning every local counter-culture paper’s (The Pitch) “Best Of” annual awards year after year, and forging friendships with other internationally minded artists such as Michael “Seven” Summers (producer for Tech-9ne and Strange Music), Oddisee, and Miles Bonney.  These friendships developed into working relationships, as Stik Figa made the album “As Himself” with Michael Summers producing the entire project.   Stik then got the call from Oddisee to create an Ep together and soon after signed with budding Hip-Hop/Soul label Mello Music Group.

Stik Figa’s sound is as comfortable in a candy painted Cutlass, as his words are in the Paris Review.
